Gerddi-duon is Welsh for ‘black garden’, this is very appropriate, as the soil in the garden is very ‘black’.
There has been a homestead here at Gerddi-Duon since the 15th century. The existing building was built here somewhere in the middle of the 18th century. The later additions to the house were put on prior to 1841, when the house was a coaching inn.
The Hare and Hound, as it was known then, served as a coaching inn to the travellers passing the door on their way out of Mold to Denbigh. In those days any overnight visitors slept in the loft with the hay, we hope that your stay will not be that bad!
Fortunately there are a lot of original features remaining within the house, these include large fireplaces, vaulted cellar etc..
Before Gerddi-duon was a pub or coaching inn, one of it occupiers was a livestock rustler, and twice went up in front of the Earl of Chester for his antics, it is believed that he ‘got off’ on both occasions.
Gerddi-Duon in its later years has been a farm of about 100 acres on the Gwysaney Estate. Over the years it has been a pig, dairy, beef and arable farm
